Omono's story
A while after Amono’s husband passed, she processed his 60 million Uganda shillings ($16,729) pension, which she distributed among all her children, and used the balance to purchase land for herself.
She has since then initiated the process of registering the land as hers, but was faced with unexpected challenges. Her brothers-in-law forcibly took the land sale agreement from Amono’s daughter as she was helping her mother to make copies at the printery.
One of them even went further and encroached on the share of the customary land that had been allocated to Amono by her late husband.
Amono came to the BarefootLaw Box in Namutumba for guidance. When the first brother-in-law was contacted by the lawyers about taking the land sale agreement, he claimed that his actions were intended to prevent Amono from selling the land. He also argued that not all his late husband's children benefited from the pension payout.
The second brother agreed to return the land sale agreement to Amono and never to encroach on her share of customary land. The family also agreed that Amono’s stepchildren would inherit property off the greater family inheritance.
