The BarefootLaw Boxes
The BarefootLaw Box is a recycled shipping container, powered by solar and redesigned to be fitted with an internet connection, screens, to allow community members to connect with lawyers for legal guidance and mediation.
The idea behind their design is to make them beautiful and attractive to all that fear legal institutions such as police stations and courts.
One of the major hindrances to Access to Justice in Uganda, especially in rural areas, is the inaccessibility (in terms of distance) of Justice pathways such as the Police, Court, etc. BarefootLaw recognised the gap in the system and set up the LawBox. The LawBox has since partnered with the Local Council leaders in Kole Sub County, the Police, and the Court to help the people in the area get justice for their different legal needs.
Since its deployment, The BarefootLaw Boxes have conducted 32 legal trainings, with Local and cultural leaders, Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), 82 mediations, and 220 cases handled. The cases handled include Domestic Violence issues, land ownership rights, criminal matters, etc.
BarefootLaw currently runs three BarefootLaw Boxes in; Nsinze Sub County – Namutumba District, Bala Sub County- Kole District and Paicho Sub-County in Gulu District.
Justice Microgrid
Installing solar at BarefootLaw will harness the sun's power to create a resilient energy infrastructure for key justice institutions. The primary focus is to power our AI-supported BarefootLaw Box and to light key justice convergence points, including village markets, walkways, boreholes, community halls, local courthouses and the community police stations. This ambitious project is supported by partners Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) and Hon. Ann Claire Williams (Ret.)
