On the 11th and 12th of July 2024, the Dispute Resolution Hub, one of the winners of the 2023 BarefootLaw Justice Innovator Challenge in Kenya, in collaboration with CHEMA Initiative, Jamii Action Centre and Suluhu Dispute Resolution Chamber and in partnership with Barefoot Law embarked on a two-day legal aid clinic in Kwale and Kilifi counties with over 150 participants. The aim of this legal aid clinic was to sensitize community members about negotiation and mediation as forms of alternative dispute resolution.
The legal aid clinics covered various aspects of negotiation and mediation such as; an introduction to basic principles, the merits and demerits of both and the application of negotiation and mediation techniques in day-to-day scenarios. Breakout sessions were also held where each group had an opportunity to discuss what they had understood about negotiation and mediation, as well as reality-testing to find out what kinds of disputes are commonly faced within the community and their perception of the efficacy of negotiation or mediation as a tool to resolve these disputes.
The reception of the sessions and the active participation of the community members during the clinics was overwhelming and highlighted the large gap many communities in the coastal region face when it comes to access to justice.
The sensitization culminated in legal aid being conducted physically and virtually, with members of the community having the opportunity to speak to a lawyer about legal challenges they were facing.
