BarefootLaw Box

The idea behind their design is to make them beautiful and attractive to all who fear traditional justice institutions such a s police stations and courts. In the decade of BarefootLaw’s existence, our work has revealed to us that people within our communities have four major barriers to accessing legal support.

These are physical (distance to justice access centres), psychological (they are afraid of these justice actors such as court and the police), financial (legal support is costly and many times riddled with corruption) and social (societal gender expectations affect how people, especially women, interact with justice providers). The BarefootLaw Box is a solar-powered recycled shipping container, repurposed to overcome structural barriers to access to legal support for rural communities

They are fitted with an internet connection and screens, to allow community members to connect with lawyers for free legal guidance and mediation. These lawyers are often stationed in the capital of Uganda, a six (6) – hour drive away but could also be stationed anywhere in the world and still be able to serve. We currently run three (3) BarefootLaw Boxes in Eastern and Northern Uganda.

The services offered by the virtual lawyers at the BarefootLaw Boxes include mediation and alternative dispute resolution sessions, customized legal training sessions for groups i.e. Local leaders, Village savings groups and women’s entrepreneuria l groups, and one-on-one legal inquiries. Inclusivity is paramount.

All BarefootLaw Boxes are installed in spaces that are donated by community leadership. They are surrounded by a justice ecosystem, close to police stations, courts and community leader’s offices. These strategic locations support the work at the BarefootLaw Boxes because they are central convening points for people seeking legal support – it is also an extra layer of security.
